Sore Thumbs: Goodbye Sore Thumbs. Hello...?

  • Ben1842 · 11 months ago
Will this new venture be Video/Audio/Text or All of the above?
  • Shoe · 11 months ago
If we get funding, then all of the above. If not, then just text for now.
  • ColinSFX · 11 months ago
If you need a camera and video work for the project done around NYC, send an email my way and I'd be glad help out.
  • Shoe · 11 months ago
Boy, do I miss Crispin posting around here!
  • d0ug18 · 11 months ago
Yeah I miss him too! More Crispin Please! While we are on that, more Shoe too!
  • Ferb · 11 months ago
I'm really excited to see what you guys can come up with! I've been a huge fan of yours, Shoe, for years. I was really sad to see you leave EGM/1UP. I just recently found this place after trying to find what you were up to after leaving there. I wish you guys the best of luck in your future endeavors. With the staff you have gathered, I have no doubts that it'll kick ass!
  • nushab · 11 months ago
i sure miss crispin posting around here too shoe! my life just is not complete haha
  • El_TigroX · 11 months ago
Count me in gentlemen... cant' wait to see what you all produce. Man, if only Crispin were here to celebrate....
  • Returners · 11 months ago
Maybe you guys could get in along with Area 5?

    It will be awesome.
  • karen · 11 months ago
Oh noes, Dan! I was actually just an art person/designer. I can't take the credit of being the art director for 1UP. You guys overestimated me :)
  • Pegleg Joe · 11 months ago
Looking forward to the new site and glad to see you got a great group back in the spotlight.
  • Nich · 11 months ago
"They’re the ones who made EGM, CGW, and 1UP so good, so I’m super honored to be working with some of them again."

Yeah, cause the guys with UGO now didn't do anything. I thought you were above this, Shoe.
  • Mike · 11 months ago
I think you're reading too much in to that.

I can't wait to see what comes of this. I know it's a pipe dream, but I'm still aching for a feature heavy print magazine with a heavy design focus. I'll sit here and pretend that conceding to the idea of a quarterly somehow makes that plausible.
  • Nich · 11 months ago
Not really. It's a sentiment I've seen in a number of places elsewhere after the 1UP/EGM blowup: everyone good is gone, the site is a ghost of its former self now. I just didn't expect to see it here.
  • Shoe · 11 months ago
Ah, that was my bad. I didn't mean that at all... fixed now. I just wasn't thinking.
  • Brian · 11 months ago
I can see where you're coming from, but to a lot of us, EGM holds a special place in our hearts since we were subscribers for so many years. I didn't really go to 1up much, until last summer, so I'm not as familiar with the new editors. I'm sure some of you (assuming you're a 1uper) are fine people and good writers, but we just aren't as familiar with your work. I've been checking up on 1up recently, even though I was disappointed with Ziff and UGO's actions, and it seems like things are off to a fine start.

Unfortunately, when it comes to writing, people tend to go with who they're familiar with. I'm guilty of this as well, but I try to branch out and check new content when I get the chance. I'm interested in working in this industry, so I would hope that people aren't just blind fans and look for the best content, regardless of who it comes from. So I guess I can see your point. One thing that worries me about game sites these days, is they sometimes hire people strictly for eye candy (Jessica Chobot and G4 come to mind), and at least for me, I'd much rather see someone who knows the subject matter well, and is passionate about it. I really can't understand why UGO would have kept on some of the newer writers who tend to exaggerate and make lists such as (the top 5 most irritating RPG characters) just to get attention. I'm not saying they're all bad, but stuff like that doesn't attract me to the site. There are still some solid writers there though, so I'm not going to give up on the site.

Hey if you guys are looking to do some Motion Design or Visual Effects work I'd love to help. Without you guys my office hours drag on and on. Here is a link to my Motion graphics reel. If your interested there is a link for a VFX real at the bottom. I can give you more details if you send me an email but my resume on my site may answer all your questions.

    What about Sean Baby!?
  • Todd · 11 months ago
    God no.

No offense to anyone who enjoys his work, but the last time he made me laugh was when I was fifteen?
  • mike · 11 months ago
oooh, big man with the distinguished sense of humor. I imagine if he were hired, his work wouldn't be shoved in your face. You probably wouldn't have to read it if you didn't want to. just sayin'.
  • Todd · 11 months ago
I wouldn't have to read it, and long after I found his brand of humor to be immature and well, not funny, I skipped his column in every EGM I got.

Let me say I was surprised the man worked for EGM and kept his job long after I realized I didn't find him funny anymore. This was a magazine that numerous times had to restate the fact that they were targeting an older audience. Now I'm not denying the fact that many people reading video game magazines aren't going to enjoy Mr. Seanbaby and his "humor", but I also wouldn't put him at the top of my list for humorists I'd ask to write for my new and upcoming project.

I'll also put it out there that as a distinguished humorist, I would love a job writing for Shoe in this new project he has lined up. Is there an application out there?
  • Mike · 9 months ago
Well, we can't all be as mature as the rest. It wasn't just seanbaby that was immature, the rest of the guys used plenty of potty humor over at EGM, even though they did claim to be for a "mature audience." It's kind of funny, when you think about it, sometimes people only use disclaimer of "for mature audience" to give themselves an excuse to tell as many dick and fart jokes as possible. I see where your coming from though, Seanbaby might be considered a bit much for those who don't enjoy the most juvenille humor.

I have to say I enjoy his style. I love the dynamic of Shane, Crispin and Seanbaby on broken pixels as well. Maybe I'm a simple man.
  • Cody W. · 11 months ago
Ah... so this is what you meant. Hopefully you guys will be able to get this going. Karen Chu did some great stuff for 1UP, and seeing people like Donahoe and Ford back in action is awesome. Good luck to you guys, and I'll let you know if I run into any rich people.

Oh, and Crispin: We miss your comments man. Come on. Show us some love.

I'm glad to see that you guys are making plans, pulling dollars, and building momentum! That's a veritable hall of fame's worth of games journalism talent you've got on your hands, and I hope that everything goes swimmingly. If you guys ever need any back-end technical support for getting things running, you have my email.

I recommend you have Crispin continue working his Peggle in the shadows: clearly he isn't -interested- in the Sore Thumbs limelight. Perhaps he should write a stylebook for news, previews, reviews, and features to help everyone get things started? I mean sure, his articles are entertaining, intelligent, and downright suave: but if Crispin doesn't find them fulfilling, who are we to solicit his genius thus? Minds should be left to the work that comes to them most naturally. Maybe for Crispin, this consists of some serious Peggle. Only time (and Crispin) will tell.
  • J Strike · 11 months ago
Good to see that you all are going to keep at it, it sucks what happened over there.

Question, Will you guys be looking for other employees to help out with this? I just graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in marketing and am stuck in the job looking loop within this horrible economy and would love to jump into a new venture.
  • Sonicjon360 · 11 months ago
Well, I am very excited to see what your new venture will be. I've been a fan of EGM ever since the N64 came out, and with Area 5, and hopefully your venture, I am just glad to see that you and the other former EGM/1UP members are starting to make it a come back. I really thought that the only time I would ever actually see a video game review from this point on was when I made a review for my school newspaper. "phew" least that's over.
  • The_Fallen · 11 months ago
Thank god the indenpendents still exist in this industry. I can't wait for your future project. You and EGM actually made me want to read a magazine, normally I consider them pretty non-essentail. But not EGM, but thats in the past now and your future looks very bright you lucky bastards. Also, I just saw the program you guys posted on YouTube and "it was interesting and I wish to prescribe to your newletter". Lastly CRUSH 1UP, I loved that site for what it was but since the takeover I kind of find the site repulsive no offenese to anyone who still works there.
  • Nick · 11 months ago
This sounds. Really looking forward to seeing how this comes together. Best of luck to all of you with this.
  • Sonicjon360 · 11 months ago
Hey, as long as it is not riddled with advertisements like UGO is, I am ok with the(in my opinion, not the same) 1UP....for now...
  • cognitive77 · 11 months ago
How would one go about contacting you Dan about being an investor?
  • Shoe · 11 months ago
Email address is now in the header. Thanks!
  • s. tran · 11 months ago
hey Dan email me if you need some artwork. I'd rather discuss this in private email.
  • Shoe · 11 months ago
We don't really need any art, but thanks for offering!
  • ArrestedDeveloper · 11 months ago
Do I sense Gamers.com 2.0? What I hope is you guys have convinced GameCrazy to buy EGM and make it their official magazine.
  • MrRogers · 10 months ago
Or someone could create "Electronic Gamers Monthly" I wonder if there would be any
legal issue's with a name like that?
  • Mike E · 11 months ago
Good luck! I'm interested if you need anyone with a business degree.
  • Kevin · 11 months ago
Can't wait. Glad to see you guys all get together.
  • Richard · 11 months ago
Dan - I have been a big fan of yours and also a lot of the staff that you worked with for years. First off thanks for what you have done with the mag and web. Most of all I look forward to what you have planned and now its really time to spread your wings... Good luck man...
  • cron · 11 months ago
    Hell yeah!

I wish you the best of luck in this new enterprise, and I will, of course, follow it from the very beginning.
  • JD_Ure · 11 months ago
    That's a dream team!
I wish I hadn't gone with Bernie Madoff with my investments.
Where's Crispin gone off to? I love his smart aleckey tom foolery, and his low brow hi-jinx!
  • David · 11 months ago
Have you guys considered working with the other guys? Maybe combining Geekbox Radio, Rebel FM, CO-OP and whatever else you guys do into a super site just like 1up used to be?

Either way I'm gonna check out all that stuff, but it might be cool to see all of you guys back together again.
  • Brian · 11 months ago
Crispy, get back here! I refuse to go to the new site, unless you're on board.
  • Mucudadada · 11 months ago
Ok! Just keep us posted on the new site. I'v enjoyed what life Sore Thumbs has had and I look forward to commenting on the next site. Thanks!

P.S. I never knew there was a facebook group. Cool!
  • bokista · 11 months ago
Great hearing you on Big O and Dukes. Between Giant Bomb as ex-GameSpot and your new project as ex-EGM/1up, the game industry is well-covered. Looking forward to it.
  • Varian · 11 months ago
I've been wondering what exactly you've been up to and I still don't!! LOL!!!!! TEASE!!!
  • Jeff V. · 11 months ago
I can't wait to see what the new project is. I'll be supporting it from the beginning.
  • Ben List · 11 months ago
another motion graphics reel. should you want something a bit... odd.
  • Ben List · 11 months ago
  • darknite39 · 11 months ago
So, does this mean I need to start obsessively archiving this blog, or will the past posts remain available in some form?
  • Shoe · 11 months ago
The original Tumblr should still stick around: http://sorethumbs.tumblr.com. I just own the SoreThumbsBlog.com URL and that will forward to the new project instead of this site.
  • darknite39 · 11 months ago
Awesome! Good luck on your new venture, whatever form it may take.
  • CrispinB · 11 months ago
Sorry I'm late to the party. Speaking of that Big O and Dukes Show, a bunch of us EGMers tried to crank call Shoe when he was on that program. I got through the screener and was nearly ready to ask my question when the show ran out of time. And speaking of Denny's, I'm torn between the Slim Slam or the Skinny Moons.
  • Todd · 11 months ago
I'll donate $100 for you to tell me what this project is, and I swear I won't say a thing. I am a man of my word, Shoe.
  • Shoe · 11 months ago
    Sorry man! Can't say. :)
  • Todd · 11 months ago
    It was worth a shot!
  • mike · 11 months ago
you should donate the $100 anyway
  • Todd · 11 months ago
I'm putting it into consideration. I'll make a decent paycheck next week, but tuition and books are killing me so far this semester.
  • Lodis_O · 11 months ago
Super psyched about the new project Shu. It's a great group you guys have there.

Also, Crispin come back! We miss you. We can't lose you to the sea! :)
  • CrispinB · 11 months ago
  • mmmCake · 11 months ago
    Good stuff.

I'm planning on donating and I'm joining the Facebook page.
  • ATC_1982 · 11 months ago
You know once your new project is unveiled it will breed swarms on the web to y'all. Good luck and let us know if we could ever help again.
  • jon · 11 months ago

  • Swamp Donkey · 11 months ago
Great news Shoe, can't wait to see the new stuff. I'd pay a pretty penny for a subscription to a new magazine by you guys.
  • Marcelo · 11 months ago
    Dan / Crispin,

I would be interested in investing on this project of yours. Let me know how I can reach you or we can schedule something to talk about your plans.

    Marcelo
  • Shoe · 11 months ago
Hi Marcelo! I realized after I put this post up that we should include a way to contact us. :) Email link is now in the header. Thanks!
  • Dan · 11 months ago
    The Dork Knight Returns!
  • Jeff Rivera · 11 months ago
Good luck, guys, I'll be watching intently to see how this all plays out and will be there to support the project as it comes along. Keep us updated regularly!
  • Nick · 11 months ago
After all of the hilarious stories I've heard about Crispin on various RIP EGM podcasts, I sincerely miss Crispin's writing and posts. EGM/1up was great at putting the personalities of the writers in the forefront, and Crispin is certainly one that stands out... in a good way even.
  • CrispinB · 11 months ago
Heh--thanks man. I hope the truth isn't standing in the way of a good story on all these podcasts. :)
  • Nick · 11 months ago
I got some funny looks on my way home on the train hearing about both the Cone of Violence and the motorized skateboard - I couldn't help but laugh out loud.

Reminded me a lot of my college journalism days - sleep deprivation and the pressure of a crazy deadline make you do some weird things.
  • Sam Cooke · 11 months ago
From someone's that's already tried and assuming it's video game related... Heh, good luck.
  • Chris Tilton · 11 months ago
I'm intrigued. It'll be interesting to see how all these ex-1up/EGM/etc projects turn out. It seems that some are involved in more than one. At some point, you may be competing with each other for viewership, no? I suppose that all depends on what each of these new things (eat-sleep-game and Rebel FM, Geekbox Radio, Area5.tv, and now Shoe's new venture) end up offering.

I wish the best of luck to all of you, though. And WE MISS YOU CRISPIN!
  • mike · 11 months ago
yay, I can't wait to hear the first episode of denny'scast!
  • CrispinB · 11 months ago
Maybe if Shoe's venture really takes off, we'll have the next Denny'scast at Red Lobster or Olive Garden.
  • Chris Tilton · 11 months ago
    What about Sizzler?
  • Gene · 11 months ago
Thank God! Shoe, you've been one of my favorite videogame journalists since I began reading EGM in the mid 90's. I thought it really sucked when you left EGM and was really saddened when EGM got suddenly cancelled and 1up lost, well... everybody. I look forward to the project you're putting together and the honest non-game studio influenced reviews that you've done with great integrity for years.
  • Solid Snake · 11 months ago
I think you should hire me to quietly take out your opponents.

S.S. (Retired, but not dead yet).
  • Nintendoll · 11 months ago
Good luck guys. Sounds like whatever project you're working on will be awesome.
  • CerebralEdge · 11 months ago
Hey, you guys should get Mark MacDonald on this crew. Is he still doing Gamevideos? He was one of my favourite EGMers.
  • Chris Tilton · 11 months ago
Mark lives in Tokyo and works for 8-4, a video game translation company started by John Ricciardi (another Ziff alum) and Hiroko Minamoto.
  • CerebralEdge · 11 months ago
Actually, now that you mention that, I vaguely remember hearing about 8-4, I just didn't know he was there. That's pretty cool I guess.
  • Homer Simpson · 11 months ago
    "Oohh I love legitimate theatre"
  • Raymond · 10 months ago
Thanks for the props Mr. Hsu! Best of luck to you in everything. I'll be wishing you the best...except when I'm watching American Idol. The show requires my complete attention.
  • Taker · 10 months ago
Wait a second.... Michael Donahoe was Quartermann?
